Srinagar, June 2: The Income Tax Department Srinagar detected certain discrepancies in tax-deduction-at-source and uploading of quarterly e-TDS returns in Estates Department.

In a statement here today the IT Department said in a surprise inspection it detected discrepancies in tax deduction at source and uploading of quarterly e-TDS returns in the office of Deputy Director Estates, Srinagar.

“The discrepancies have resulted in short deduction of tax of Rs 5 lakh,” it said, adding that the DDO concerned had also failed to upload e-TDS returns during the financial years 2007-08 and 2008-09 resulting in non-credit of tax.

It said the inspection was conducted on receipt of numerous complaints by the taxpayers complaining non-crediting of their tax amounts due to “failure of DDOs concerned to upload e-their TDS returns.”

“More such inspections shall be conducted in future,” it said.

Meanwhile, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Amritsar G R Sufi today held meetings with various delegations of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Traders Federation and Beopar Mandal, Maharaj Gunj, Srinagar.

Urging them for voluntary tax compliance, Sufi asked the members of the delegations to act as bridge between the department and those traders who were still not filing their IT returns. Sufi asked the members to contribute substantially in increasing number of assessees.

Sufi urged all DDOs to file quarterly e-TDS returns without fail and to quote PAN invariably in all correspondences and returns.
