Kashmir bleeds
Many youth have fallen to police bullets in the past 15 days in Kashmir. What is intriguing to see is that there is nobody to put an end to this mayhem, not even on humanitarian grounds. I am perplexed to see the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, handling the issue of civilian killings in a very immature manner. Earlier he got the Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, removed, but replaced him with a person, whose image is not all milk and honey, if reports are to be believed. That the government, as per Ali Muhammad Sagar, is embarrassed over killings is not enough. What matters is to put an end this mayhem once and for all. For all practical purposes, the Peoples' Democratic Party provided good governance and reined in the security forces, who had then unleashed a reign of terror. Today the same terror is dancing on the streets of Kashmir. During the Mufi-led regime, there was at least a sense of security among people. This is not to praise Mufti or PDP, for, today they are just playing politics. But then it is a fact that the pace of unleashing terror by forces was less. Today it is bullets versus stones. From all possible sides, Kashmiris are being cornered. They are suffering mentally, politically, socially and economically. People have lost hope in the present dispensation. We are back to square one: the same Ikhwan Raj where people would fear to move out of their homes. What a tragedy! Is anybody listening?
