Geelani calls for protests on Friday, shutdown on Monday

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, May 3: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has asked people to observe a complete shutdown on June 7 against the Kashmir visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and killing of three youth in a fake encounter in Machil sector. He also urged people to stage peaceful protest on June 4 after Friday prayers against Israeli aggression on Palestinians.
“Giving shutdown calls has become a compulsion as there is no other option left with us to make world aware about the gross human rights violations being perpetrated by troops against innocent Kashmiris,” Geelani said in a statement.
“Instead of calling for shutdown we would have liked to appeal people to come on streets and hold protests on Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit to the state but the state administration on such occasions imposes undeclared curfew and forces people to stay indoors,” he added.
He urged the people to hold peaceful protest demonstrations after Friday prayers on June 4, against Israeli aggression on innocent Palestinians. “They are our brethren, we cannot act as mute spectators on the atrocities being inflicted on them,” Geelani added.
Referring to Dr Singh’s Kashmir visit he said, “We don’t have any personal enmity or grudge against him. But he is coming here as the Prime Minister of a country whose forces are killing innocent Kashmiris and are strengthening its occupation by resorting to different means. Killing of three youth in a fake encounter near Line of Control in Machil sector is yet another instance of innocents being murdered in cold blood.”
