PDC expedites process for 2-hydel power projects
FIRDOUS TAK
Jammu, June 4: Amid consensus between India and Pakistan over some of the power projects in Jammu and Kashmir, state owned Power Development Corporation (PDC) has expedited process for construction of two prestigious hydel power projects, Baglihar Phase-II and Rattle, over river Chenab.
Sources in PDC told Greater Kashmir that a meeting between the officials of the corporation and Central Electricity Authority has been fixed for June 8 to deliberate upon the proposal of the state government to construct 450 MWs Baglihar Phase –II over Chenab at Chanderkote in Ramban district.
The project has already received environmental clearance from the Union Environment and Forests Ministry, while some initial work has also been executed by the Corporation along with the Phase – I, already commissioned.
The second phase of the Baglihar project will generate 450 MW of power as was the case with the first phase of project on river Chenab, which was commissioned in October 2008. It generates 450 MW of power.
Pakistan protested the building of the dam on river Chenab, saying it would affect the water flow downstream. However, during the 3-days talks held between the two sides in union capital the issue has been finally resolved enabling the state to start the work on Phase – II
