Shopian shuts for Shakeel
KHALID GUL
Shopian, Mar 14: Amid massive protests this south Kashmir town observed a complete shutdown against the detention and torture of Shakeel Ahmed Ahangar, brother of Asiya and husband of Neelofar, who were raped and murdered last year.
The call for shutdown and protests was given by the Majlis-I-Mushawarat, spearheading the agitation to seek justice for victims whose bodies were found on the banks of Rambiara stream on May 30, 2009.
All the shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic remained off the roads.
Hundreds of people assembled in the main chowk this morning and staged demonstrations demanding action against the policemen who “detained and tortured” Shakeel without any reason.
Pertinently, Shakeel was detained from his shop by the police for allegedly using abusive language against them when they had asked him to
park away the vehicle some where else. However, the eyewitnesses had contested the police claims saying that he was feeding his kid and had told the policemen to wait for a while. But the policemen started abusing him and beat him up mercilessly and then took him into custody. He was later released and referred to SKIMS for treatment.
