Ganderbal, Mar 1: Alert residents on Monday apprehended an impostor posing as deputy superintended of police crime and his accomplice at Lar and handed him over to police.
Posing as official of crime branch, Mushtaq Ahmed Ganai and his accomplice Amjad Ahmad Wani allegedly barged into the house of Ghulam Ahmed at Lar and demanded ransom. “The two persons wearing a pheran barged into my house this morning and asked for money. I resisted and with the help of neighbours apprehended them and later handed them to police,” said Ghulam Ahmed.
“They threatened me if I inform anybody and said that they were from crime branch. One of them posed himself of DySP crime Branch Bandipora,” he said.
Police have seized several identity cards with designations like DySP Crime Bandipora, anti-terrorist squad wing JK police, accountant NHPC, provincial president Rashtriya Lok Dal.
“Several I-cards, ATM cards, fake appointment orders were seized from them and the duo has been arrested under FIR 22/10-170/419/384/511 RPC and the further investigation is on,” DySP Ganderbal Tahir Geelani told Greater Kashmir.
Sources said Mushtaq hails from Guroora Bandipora and unsuccessfully contested the 2008 elections on Rashtriya Lok Dal ticket from Hajin constituency and got around 2700 votes.
“He was busy in distributing fake appointment orders against money among the youth of Hajin and Bandipora and was a professional extortionist,” they alleged. The other impostor Amjad hails from Hajin.
