Jammu tops in suicide of youth

Jammu, Mar 23: Jammu district has topped the list in number of suicides committed by youths in the state, with 118 of them taking their life in 2009.
Three districts of Leh, Kargil and Poonch of Jammu and Kashmir have recorded no suicides in 2008 and 2009.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during Question Hour informed the state Assembly that 118 youths committed suicides in 2009 as compared to 122 in 2008 in the state. Jammu district with 22 suicides tops the list followed by Islamabad district of Kashmir valley with 20 suicides, eight each in Srinagar and Kulgam, he said.
However, there were no suicides reported in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh region and Poonch district of Jammu region in 2008 and 2009, Abdullah said.
There were 80 and 60 suicides reported in Jammu region in 2008 and 2009 respectively and 42 and 58 in Kashmir region in 2008 and 2009, he said. The reason for the suicides are mainly unemployment, financial stress, high expectation of parents from their children in examination, incompatibility in relations between married couples, he said.
