Srinagar, Mar 24: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir conducted its 27th Zonal Research & Extension Advisory Committee Meeting at Shalimar Campus, here with Prof. Anwar Alam, Vice Chancellor in chair.
Prof Alam urged the scientists of university and officers of the state agriculture department to strain every nerve to achieve self-sufficiency in food grains and make good quality seed available to the farming community at the beginning of each season.
He stressed on the popularization of newly released varieties, by the University and Rice-Wheat rotation to help achieve the food security in the region.
He laid stress on the organization of the front line demonstrations in an effective manner to convince the farmers to adopt new varieties and innovative techniques.
He made a special mention of the Pusa Sugand-3, aromatic fine grain variety of rice identified suitable for cultivation under Kashmir conditions and said that the variety has a good yield potential compared to scented local land races and underlined the importance of its wide scale adoption particularly in district Budgam.
Being a tourist state, Vice-Chancellor advised the breeders to work on maize specialties particularly sweet corn, pop corn and baby corn for cultivation under Kashmir conditions and describing seed as the basic input, which helps realize the genetic yield potential of the varieties.
