Smuggled timber used for school kitchen construction: EPF
GK NEWS NETWORK
Doda: Environment Protection Forum here has expressed concern over the alleged use of smuggled timber in construction of the school kitchens for various government educational institutions in the district.
The Forum has alleged that green deodar and pine trees were illegally felled in Education zone of Ghat and Doda in connivance with timber smugglers for the construction of nearly 200 such kitchens.
“There were clear instructions that steel angles should be used in roofing and frames of doors and windows of the kitchen sheds, but shortcut method was adopted by using smuggled timber in connivance with smugglers throwing all the norms to wind”, the Forum alleged.
It said that about 600 scants of timber had been illegally extracted and used in these kitchen in education zone Ghat and Doda during 2008-10 without permission and sanction from the forest department. “This was done only to fetch additional monetary benefit for the contractor and the officials concerned,” EPF alleged.
