Dirtiest city: why should the rating surprise us?
This refers to the news titled “Srinagar—4th dirtiest city” (GK, May 12). Thanks to the sanitation survey conducted by the Union Ministry for Urban Development. It is really a matter of concern for the people and government of Jammu and Kashmir that the Srinagar city has been ranked as the 4th dirtiest city in India. There are so many factors contributing to the mess. The frequent digging of roads and keeping them open for a long time is an important issue that needs be addressed immediately. Poor sanitation is another giant problem. A little rainfall and our roads get inundated. This hampers the smooth movement of traffic and pedestrians. What is the Srinagar Municipal Corporation doing? It is time to act, not think. We always talk a lot about beautification of Srinagar. But not much has been done in this regard. Besides the government functionaries, people must also behave responsibility when it comes to keeping the surroundings clean. Together we can make the city a better place to live in.
