JK Handicrafts posts Rs 11 cr turnover

Srinagar, May 20: J&K Handicraft (S&E) Corporation has achieved Rs 11 crore turnover during the last year as against Rs. 9.72 crore during 2008-09. The Corporation has fixed a target of Rs. 13.39 Crore for the current fiscal.
This information, according to an official statement, was given to the Minister for Industries and Commerce S. S. Slathia during his visit to the Kashmir Government Arts Emporium (showroom) of Handicrafts (S&E) Corporation today. He was told that this sale turnover has been achieved through the strenuous efforts of employees of the corporation at various showrooms across the country.
During his visit the Minister went round different sections like Embroidery, wood carving, paper machie etc and interacted with different artisans who were on work.
Managing director of the Corporation S. A. Tak briefed the Minister about other remarkable achievements of the corporation registered in the previous years. He was told that new concept of chain stitching commonly known as Jalakdozi over leather and bamboo with willow have been introduced.
Slathia evinced keen interest in the heritage handicraft works on different carpets displayed in the showroom which are said to be 200 years old and directed for preservation of such handicraft work for the posterity.
The Minister was also informed the Corporation has launched a website to promote its sales adding that modernization work of all the showrooms is apace on modern lines which will help to further boost the sales of the corporation across the country. He was also told that three showrooms at Lal Chowk Srinagar, Jammu, and Chandigarh have been modernized at a cost of Rs. 1. 60 Crore. The modernization includes computerization of showrooms, introducing e- commerce system with gate way payment and security for exploring export potential and whole sale business. Besides renovation work of the Delhi showroom at Irwin road is apace and is likely to be completed at the earliest.
Slathia also convened a meeting of officers and staff of the corporations and impressed to work with zeal and dedication to achieve this year target of Rs. 13.39 crore fixed by the corporation for current financial year. He said as soon as tangible targets for making the corporation a profitable one that soon the corporation is made profitable, all perks would be extended to the corporation management.
