MHA to decide on Afzal’s plea: Moily
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, May 21: The Law Minister, M Veerappa Moily today said the Home Ministry would decide on the mercy petition of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
“You must have read in newspapers that it (Afzal’s file) has moved. It ultimately is for the MHA to take call,” Moily told reporters here.
About the reported remarks of Home Minister, P Chidambaram that Guru’s execution would have to wait as there were several others on the death row, Moily shot back: “I don’t think he has given a statement like that.”
Moily had recently said he was hopeful that Mumbai terror attack convict Ajmal Kasab would be hanged within a year.
Delhi Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna will put his view on the mercy petition of Guru and then the file will be sent to Home Ministry. On Wednesday, Delhi Government sent the Guru file to Khanna, unambiguously backing capital punishment for the convict.
But at the same time, the government had asked the Centre to take care of the law and order situation while carrying out the execution here.
The government, whose opinion on the mercy petition was sought by the Union Home Ministry almost four years ago, had sent the file to Khanna on Monday, but the LG had returned it on Tuesday seeking more clarifications.
