Sports Council election delay impedes functioning
SAMAAN LATEEF
Srinagar, May 25: The government is sitting over the elections to Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council for more than a year which has in turn hit smooth functioning of the body.
Sources told Greater Kashmir that the members for the Council which as per the rules is headed by the Chief Minister (president) with Minister for Sports as vice-president, have already been nominated, but the election are being delayed to appoint the staff including Secretaries, Joint Secretaries and Treasurers in Kashmir and Jammu. The 29-member body which also includes four to six officials from different departments was nominated last year.
“The temporary arrangements have hit the functioning of the Council badly as in the absence of the permanent members, the important decisions regarding maintenance and up gradation of the grounds and infrastructure building have been delayed,” sources said.
The grounds including Bakshi Stadium, Polo View and other are in bad shape, sources said. “Earlier the authorities sidelined the officials who were working as permanent managers and were being appreciated for their maintenance work of different grounds in the city. Now they (authorities) have appointed in-charge managers, who don’t have any contribution towards sports sector, to look after the grounds. The Council has not been re-organized even once since it was set up.”
Sources said there was a growing resentment among the Council employees for government’s failure to provide benefits to them under the 6th Pay Commission recommendations. “The Council has no paucity of funds but the employees have been deprived of their right,” said an employee, wishing not to be named.
Despite repeated attempts the minister for youth and sports, R S Chib didn’t pick up the phone.
