Must read
This refers to Aarzoo Khan's review of Prof. M. A. Wani's book 'Islam in Kashmir.' This book analyzes various dimensions of Kashmir society on the eve of entry of Islam into the Valley which ultimately facilitated conversion. It profiles Kashmir society from an intellectual viewpoint and highlights scholarly treatment of the issue. Out of authenticity, this book is a must read for history students in particular and people interested in Kashmir's past in general focusses on 'how' and 'why' of conversion, both substantiated by sources in the context of contemporary background. Margaret Hussey has rightly remarked that, 'one reason, that history repeats itself is that so many people were not listening the first time.' The false notion of 'forced Conversion' during Sultan Sikander's reign has stimulated the author's view quite interestingly and the author while refuting it mentions, 'if some conversions were won by force during the reign of Sultan Sikander then why did these converts remain solidly Muslim despite Sultan Zain al Aabideen's permission to reconvert to their old religion. It was actually the state of society that led to wide scale Islamization of Kashmir as Islam strictly prohibits caste, creed, color and differences which were prevalent in Kashmir at that time when Brahmanism was the majority religion. The same prompted Rinchan to convert to Islam after which it became 'Reference group culture.' The author has minutely dealt every important factor of conversion viz -a-viz sufis contribution and selfless devotion towards the cause, and this book deserves applaud.
