Inclement weather hits marriage celebrations
GK CITY CORRESPONDENT
Srinagar, May 29: With rains playing hide-and-seek and authorities failing to dewater residential colonies, many a marriage functions have either been postponed or solemnized with simplicity.
Since Friday Greater Kashmir received scores of notifications from the potential families to apprize the public about the program change.
“The marriage ceremony of my daughter which was scheduled for 29th and 30th May 2010 stands canceled due to the inclement weather conditions. The inconvenience caused to our esteemed guests is highly regretted,” ads like these were paged in this and other newspapers while local cable channels flashed the marquees.
Come ending May and the marriage season picks up in the Valley. But this time the weather played a spoilsport, more so, in the summer capital.
Citing reasons for the change in the celebrations, most of the families said waterlogging remained the main hindrance as compared to rains.
“Since ages, during inclement weather conditions, we Kashmiris have been managing to host guests at residential houses including neighbourhood than Shyamayas. But now unlike the past as colonies remain submerged in waters, it’s a different situation,” said a family which postponed the function.
Observers said the postponement of marriage celebrations turned common since the time people shifted to low lying areas like Natipora and Hyderpora.
“Earlier, waterlogging wasn’t a problem,” he added.
But most of the clerics in this Muslim dominated society, on the other hand, said that people should solemnize marriages with simplicity than to postpone the event for extravagance.
“These calamities are a warning from the Almighty that people should mend their ways and refrain from extravagance,” said a Molvi at a Masjid Natipora area.
“Basically, the inclement weather conditions give us a chance to bring a change in the society,” said a medico.
