Nomads stranded in Doda, Kishtwar

Srinagar, May 29: Hundreds of nomads have got stranded in the upper reaches of the Valley in view of the snowfall and the accompanying windstorm while a large quantity of livestock has perished in the hostile weather conditions prevailing in the Valley.
Reports said around 120 nomads were stranded in the upper reaches and plains of the twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar. A large number of live stocks they were carrying have also perished.
“One nomad was injured in the storm while around 1500 live stock including sheep, goats and horses perished due to the hostile weather conditions,” a local news agency reported.
Around two feet snow got accumulated in the upper reaches of the twin districts on Friday. The snow was accompanied by gusty winds.
Similar, reports poured in from Srigufwara in south Kashmir and Sangri, Varmul in North Kashmir where a number of Gujjar nomads have been stranded with most of their cattle perishing.
With the advent of summers, the Gujjar nomads move to the upper reaches of Valley along with their cattle.
Meanwhile, MLA Kishtwar, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo has urged the government to use choppers to airlift the nomads as most of areas were cutoff due to snowstorms.
