Srinagar, May 29: Kashmir Valley observed a complete shutdown on Saturday in response to the strike call given by Hurriyat Conference (G) to protest against the Jammu visit of the United Progressive Alliance Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi.
Authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions in parts of the old city under section 144 to stave off protests. Policemen and paramilitary CRPF troopers were deployed in strength in volatile areas of the old city to prevent people from staging demonstrations. No reports of protests or any other untoward incident were received from any part of the city.
The situation in uptown areas was relatively calm as private transport and a few public transport vehicles were plying.
However, shops, business establishments, banks, courts and educational institutions remained closed.
