File status report: HC to Government
ANTI-SMOKING PIL
SAMAAN LATEEF
Srinagar, May 4: The High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to file status report in four weeks in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO seeking effective ban on smoking at public places and sale of tobacco products within hundred yards of the educational institutions.
The Court asked the government to make it aware of the steps it had taken to ensure the ban on smoking in public places. “State authorities shall put up anti-smoking posters in public places including hospitals, gardens and hotels,” the Court said.
Last week JK Voluntary Health and Development Association, an NGO, filed a PIL seeking “effective implementation of Sections 4 and 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA).”
The state government is yet to implement COPTA which was enacted by centre on May 18, 2003, the PIL states.
