Witness identifies accused arrested in murder case

ROMANA CASE FOLLOW-UP

SAMAAN LATEEF

Srinagar, May 4: A year after Romana’s death, a key witness Tuesday deposed before the Court the deceased was hit by a car driven by the accused already under arrest for her murder.
“The boys who were in the car hit her (Romana) and after the incident they fled away from the spot,” the witness, Omar Bhat deposed before the Court of Principal District and Sessions Judge.
The case involving the death of 17-year-old Romana Javed  by two car borne boys on May 3, came up for hearing before the Court of Ghous-un-Nissa.
Omar deposed that on the fateful day a car with two persons onboard hit the girl.
“I was just few yards away when a black colour Alto car with two youth hit onboard the girl. Instead, of rushing the injured Romana to hospital, the duo accelerated their car and fled away from the spot.”
Omar said adding he then took the girl to Barzulla hospital in an auto.
However, the defence counsel interrupted and asked him whether he can recognize the accused, to which Omar pointed his finger towards the two accused present in the Court and replied “Yes’.
“The images of these two boys are now impressed on my mind. Being a resident of the same area, I know these boys even before the incident.”
While cross examining the witness, counsel for the accused, Advocate Mushtaq Dar asked Omar, “Why there is no mention of you taking the injured girl to Barzulla hospital in the earlier statement recorded by the Investigation Officer under 161?”
Replying to defence counsel, Omar said, “I accompanied the injured girl to the hospital in the Auto, but I don’t know why Investigation Officer has not mentioned it in the records.” Omar informed the Court that the spot of accident still bears the marks of the accident.
The accused, Shoaib Daryeel son of Muhammad Ashraf Daryeel of Nowhatta and Ubaid Ahmed Khan son of Zahoor Ali Khan of Bulbul Bagh Barzulla were present in the Court when the judge recorded the statement of the witness.
On May 3, 2009, the seventeen-year-old Romana Javed daughter of Dr Javed Shabnum of Bagh-i-Mehtab, Budgam in broad daylight was crushed to death by two car borne boys in Parraypora locality here.
Subsequently, the police arrested two teenagers as the accused in the case and also seized the Alto-car used in the crime. The accused have been charged for murder under 302, 294, 201 and 34 RPC and the charges were framed against them on March 13.
