Srinagar, Oct 31: Though the Home Minister P Childambaram visited different parts of Jammu and Kashmir during his two-day visit, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was absent all along the trip.
In Ladakh, Chidambaram took stock of the rehabilitation program for the cloudburst affected people of the region on October 30. The Minister for Tourism, Nawang Rigzin Jora and the Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Rigzin Spalbar accompanied the Home Minister to Leh and apprised him about the magnitude of the cloudburst and extent of the damages.
In Kashmir, the Home Minister chaired a high level meeting of police and administration in north Kashmir and took stock of the security situation. Apart from police and civil authorities from various north Kashmir districts, the minister for Education, Peerzada Muhammad Sayyed, received and accompanied Chidambaram.
During the entire trip, Omar, who is also the state Home Minister and Head of the Unified Command, was absent. Earlier, however, this would not be the case as and when Home Minister visited the state.
However, ahead of Childambaram’s return to New Delhi Sunday evening, the Home Minister had a meeting with Omar Abdullah.
An official spokesman said Chidambaram had a detailed meeting with Omar immediately after the former concluded his visit to Leh, Kargil and Baramulla districts.
The duo met in Srinagar this afternoon and discussed in detail the relief and rehabilitation for cloudburst affected people of Leh and Kargil. “Chidambaram assured Chief Minister that Centre will be providing more funds for permanent rehabilitation of affected people of both Leh and Kargil districts and would also provide necessary funds for reconstruction of public utility facilities,” the spokesman said.
“The issues regarding law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir also came up for the discussion during the meeting which was attended by top security and administration officials,” the spokesman added.
