Srinagar, Nov 9: Despite a magisterial probe, Army inquiry and filing of petition in State Human Rights Commission, the family of Sajjad Ahmed Ganai who was killed allegedly by troopers last year, is still awaiting justice.
For past one year, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Ganai and his wife Naseema Begum of Ganapora Langate, Kupwara are running from pillar to post to get the killers booked.
“How long we have to wait for justice? We have approached every police official, deputy commissioner and other higher ups in administration to get the killers of our son punished, but every assurance proved hoax,” Ganai told Greater Kashmir.
Recalling the fateful day of October 24, 2009, he said Sajjad left home in morning to trim branches of poplar and willow tress. “But we were shocked, when we received his bullet riddled body. The troops claim that he attacked them with an axe is a sheer lie. How can axe kill gun totting soldiers?” he asked, adding that they killed him allegedly in custody.
“There were torture marks on his body. After killing him in custody, they enacted this drama to cover up the crime,” he alleged.
According to family, thousands of people staged protest against the killing forcing police to register murder case against the Army unit. With unrelenting protests in area, the state government also ordered magisterial probe and Army ordered an inquiry, they said.
“We deposed before police and inquiry officer so that we will get fast justice and many villagers including local MLA also recorded his statement before the inquiry officer,” he added.
Failing to get justice from police and civil administration in three months, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din also filed petition in the State Human Rights Commission on World Human Rights Day last year.
“The case is still pending there and guilty men are roaming scot-free,” he said says.
When contacted, additional deputy commissioner Kupwara, Itrat Hussain said he had submitted inquiry report to the government within stipulated time. “It is for the government to take action,” Itrat said.
