Jammu, Nov 10: Reiterating government’s policy to exploit state’s water resources systematically, Minister of State for Power, Shabir Ahmad Khan said J&K was endowed with 20,000 MW hydle power potential, of which 16480 MW have been identified for harnessing in a phased manner. “The ultimate aim is to make the State self-reliant in power generation,” he added.
 Chairing a Power Development Department officers’ meet convened to review the overall power scenario, the Minister said that based on a framework, the process of the development of hydro power in the State has been set in motion for implementation of various projects with a capacity of 7000 MW during 11th and 12th five year plan.
 Stressing the need for accelerating the hydro power generation in the State, the Minister said that the Government has approved the framework for the purpose and the execution of state owned power projects with capacity of 2076 MW, three projects of 2120 MW in Joint venture, five projects in Centre sector by NHPC and one project of 690 MW under IPP are being taken up.
 The Minister called upon the concerned officers and engineers to redouble their efforts and utilized their expertise for early formulation of projects, completion of technicalities and other official matters for timely execution of power projects, besides creation and upgradation of necessary power infrastructure including grid stations, receiving stations and high and low transmission lines in the State.
 Asserting that providing of scheduled power supply to the consumers is the prime duty of the Government, the Minister instructed concerned authorities to ensure that each area gets power supply as per the prescribed schedule. He also instructed for replacement of worn out poles and laying of new wires wherever necessary, adding that checking of power pilferage and collection of power tariff by the field agencies should be the priority by monitoring the progress report each Electric Division through Superintending Engineers and as well as Chief Engineers of both the provinces.
