AFSPA panel meet postponed

RAJEEV SHARMA

Jammu, Nov 20: The meeting of high-level committee - constituted by the state government to review the areas declared disturbed under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA)– has been rescheduled for the next week.
Sources said the meeting, which was scheduled for today, could not take place due to pre-occupation of committee members. “The meeting has been rescheduled for next week but its date has not been finalized as of now,” sources added.
They said the Committee would now meet next week to review the situation in the areas, declared disturbed under the special Act. The Committee is expected to deliberate upon inputs and ground survey conducted by various intelligence and law enforcing agencies.
The state government had constituted two committees to review the areas declared disturbed under the AFSPA in the wake of prevailing unrest in Kashmir.
The committee comprising Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda, state Home Secretary B R Sharma and head of Nagrota-based 16 Corps Lt Gen Rameshwar Roy was expected to meet, here on Saturday.
Sources said the second committee - having Khoda, Sharma and Srinagar-based Corps Commander Lt Gen N C Marwah as its members – would meet in Srinagar after the meeting of first committee.
“The prime objective of these meetings is to review the Disturbed Areas Act in the entire state and carve out areas from where it could be removed,” sources maintained.
They said the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would be sitting down with officials in reviewing the possibilities of lifting AFSPA in some places.
