Onion prices soar to Rs 40 per kg
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Chandigarh, Nov 20: Prices of onion have doubled during the past fortnight owing to lesser yields in producing states. Onions, which were selling at around Rs 20 per kg in the beginning of this month, are now available in the city markets between Rs 35-40 per kg, traders here said. "This time, there has been less yield in states, including Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The new crop, which we were expecting from Alwar in Rajasthan, has got hit due to heavy rain there earlier," a trader said. He said onion prices would continue to be high during the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, potatoes are also selling on the higher side at Rs 20 per kg as the new crop has arrived in the markets. "The potato prices should come down by the end of this month," he said. Garlic prices have also seen a steep increase during the past few days. Garlic is selling in the retail markets here at Rs 180-Rs 200 per kg, a 100 per cent jump in its prices.
