JK yields Rs 390 cr excise by Oct end

Jammu, Nov 21: The Excise Department in J&K has collected a revenue of Rs 390.02 crore by October end this year, which is Rs 58.30 crore more as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. This represents 17.57 per cent growth over the corresponding period a year ago.
This was disclosed at a meeting held to review the performance of various wings of the Department here today.
The officers in the meeting were exhorted to work with greater zeal and dedication so that the revenue targets are not only achieved but exceeded as well.
On the aspect of manufacture of illicit liquor and its clandestine smuggling into the state, the meeting stressed the need for enhanced enforcement activities by the department to plug the illegal import routes. “For this to happen the officers were asked to conduct regular raids in their respective areas of jurisdiction,” an official statement said.
The meeting was informed that 154 persons were arrested in 1898 raids and 50074 Kgs of Lahan was destroyed during this period with a penalty of Rs.8.79 lakh being recovered from the offenders.
While reviewing the works programme of the department, the meeting was informed that Rs.21.80 crore have already been spent on construction of  new Toll Plaza at Lakhanpur by ending October, 2010 and the Ist phase of the Project is likely to be completed before the end of the current year.
Similarly Rs.658.00 lakh have been spent on the construction of new Toll Plaza at Nagri and the Project is likely to be completed by the end of 2010-11.
Among others, Commissioner/Secretary to Government, Finance Department Sudhanshu Pandey, Excise Commissioner, G. A. Peer, Special Secretary Finance R. K. Koul and all the Deputy Excise Commissioners and other senior officers of the department from all over the State participated in the meeting.
