GoI denies entry to US Prof: JKCCS
Srinagar, Nov 2: The Government of India has denied the entry to Professor Richard Shapiro in India.
Richard who is the Professor of Anthropology at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and husband of Angana Chatterji, Co-convener of the International People’s Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir was denied entry by the Immigration Authorities in New Delhi, said a statement issued by the JK Coalition of Civil Society. Prof Richard is a frequent visitor to Kashmir.
Prof Shapiro, a US Citizen, has been accompanying Chatterji to India since 1997, and has travelled here 30 times. “His area of work is not India or Kashmir, but focuses primarily on issues of race, class, gender, and alliance building in the United States, and discourses on power and subjectivity,” the statement said.
“Since July 2006, Prof Richard regularly travelled to Kashmir, and interacted with various rights defenders, scholars, youth, to bear witness and learn from their experiences,” it said while condemning the act.
