Kupwara, Nov 29: Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Taj Mohi ud Din today asked the engineers of Power Development Department to put in place measures for reducing the distribution losses and ensure that people get adequate supply of electricity during winter months even as he asked the District Development Commissioner (DDC) to monitor the proper and speedy implementation of Rajiv Gandhi Grammen Vidyutikaran Yojna (RGGVK) in the District.
Chairing a review meeting of the District Development Board here today, the Minister asked the Department to put dedicated staff on the job and make them accountable for the distribution of energy so that chances of pilferage and theft are controlled.
The Minister took a detailed and sector wise review of the execution of the District Plan. He was told that a plan size of Rs.94.25 crore was fixed for the District for 2010-11 out of which Rs. 49.13 crore have been spent till date, which constitutes 51 percent of total allocation.
Taj impressed upon the officers of the District administration to implement the schemes and meet the targets within the stipulated time so that benefits of these schemes reach people appropriately. He asked the officers to frame plans in consultation with elected representatives of the concerned areas. He asked the DDC to monitor proper and timely implementation of centrally sponsored schemes like RGGVY, ERA, ARSWP, MG NREGA etc. in the District. The Minister also reviewed the arrangements made for the winter in the District, particularly the snow clearance from major passes and roads of the District.
Addressing the meeting, Minister of State for PHE & Tourism, Nasir Aslam Wani, who is also vice chairman of the Board said the District has a good potential for setting up industrial units. He said the area has a good quality marble reserves which need to be exploited. He asked for obtaining expert opinion for reinvigorating marble industry in the district which he said has the potential to generate employment at a large scale in the private sector.
Earlier giving a resume of the development profile of the District, DDC, M. S. Rather said out of several centrally sponsored schemes in operation in the District, Rs.67.98 crore were expended on various ERA sponsored projects. He said under ARWSP Rs.12.09 crore were expended and 75 schemes are under implementation in the district as are 32 PMGSY road projects worth Rs.46.63 crore.
The meeting was told that under MG-NREGA Rs.16.96 crore were made available generating 5.21 lakh job days so far in the district. Under IAY 877 houseless beneficiaries were provided financial assistance for construction of their residential houses and repairs of old ones at an amount of Rs. Rs.2.83 crore. The DDC informed the meeting that under R & B sector 35.25 kms road length has been black topped, 67.35 kms were constructed and are at various stages of completion. Under Education sector, he said 33530 text books were supplied free among the students of Ist. and IInd standards, 5 kitchen sheds were constructed,175 schools were opened and upgraded at Middle, high and higher school levels in the district.
The meeting was told that 39900 hectares of land were cultivated and192090 hectares ware irrigated in the District so far. This resulted into production of 70 metric tonnes of rice, 400 quintals of wheat, 10 metric tones of maize, 900 quintals of oilseeds and 20 metric tonnes of vegetables. 148 power transformers were also repaired and 6 new transformers were replaced and installed in the District by the Department.
