Absconding SPO held

IED RECOVERY CASE

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

Jammu, Oct 12: In a major breakthrough, police claimed to have arrested the absconding Special Police Official (SPO) who is believed to be the mastermind in the transportation of the explosives to Indira Chowk in Jammu.
Sources, however, said that the dismissed SPO, Mehboob Ahmed Dar has surrendered before the Gandoh police yesterday as he was pressurized by his family members to do so after his name figured in police investigation.
Mehboob Ahmed Dar, a resident of Gandoh was evading his arrest since the recovery of huge quantity of explosives (October 9, 2010) kept in five apple boxes. Sources said that he was apprehended from Bhalla after a specific input.
“The SPO was taken to police station Gandoh and later handed over to the Doda police as he was evading his arrest since October 9” sources said.
Though intelligence agencies had arrested the driver, identified as Muneer Ahmed with his vehicle from Gujjar Nagar area on the same day, the main accused, SPO Mehboob, was believed to be the mastermind. It took three days to security agencies to apprehend him.
“The dismissed SPO has been shifted to Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) Jammu for ascertaining his role in the transportation of explosives, role of military intelligence and the final destination of the recovered explosives,” sources said.
They added that the involvement of SPO is doubtful as he might be made a “scope goat” in the entire episode allegedly by some agencies to save their own skin.
Sources further said that two army troopers were also arrested in Doda district and they are being questioned in this connection.
Notably, atleast seven persons, including a SPO and an ex-service man of army were arrested and their role in the transportation of explosives is being ascertained. Police has already clarified that it was investigating the role of some intelligence agencies in the transportation of explosives, alleged done only to secure medals.
