GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Oct 18: Police on Monday arrested the most wanted separatist leader and general secretary of Hurriyat Conference (G) Masrat Alam Bhat from city outskirts here.
The Inspector General of Police Kashmir Range, S M Sahai told Greater Kashmir that Masrat was arrested during a raid at his maternal uncle’s house at Wagund Tailbal area this evening.
Sahai said Alam’s arrest would pave the way for restoration of normalcy in the Valley which has been witnessing frequent shutdowns and curfews since the past four months.
Asked whether, he considered Alam’s arrest as his biggest achievement since he took over as IG- Kashmir, Sahai said: “I consider restoration of law and order and no killings taking place as my biggest achievement.” However, he was quick to add that Masrat’s arrest too is a “big achievement.”
Pertinently Alam was released on bail after 21 months on June 8 this year.
On June 25, Alam as chairman of Muslim League and general secretary of Hurriyat (G) launched the ‘Quit Jammu and Kashmir Movement’ when Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani was under arrest. On the same day he issued the first protest calendar of the year 2010 and continued with the practice till Geelani was released in August.
He released two video statements during the past 5-months urging people “to take the ongoing movement to its logical conclusion.”  He reportedly carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head.
