7 militants, cop killed in gunfights

Srinagar/Ganderbal Oct 1: Army on Friday claimed that it foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in frontier district of Kupwara by killing five militants, while two militants and a policeman were killed in an ongoing encounter in Ganderbal district.
MACHIL ENCOUNTER
Five militants were killed as army today foiled an infiltration bid near the LoC in Machil sector, defence sources said here.
“The army troops launched a counter-infiltration operation at Maidan Behak-Ringmala near the LoC, 125 kms from here, following information about an infiltrating column of militants,” sources said.
“Militants were challenged who retaliated with opening fire triggering a gunfight in which five militants were killed,’ sources added.
The operation was still in progress when reports last came in.
KANGAN
Two militants and a policeman were killed in an ongoing encounter in Kangan, police and reports said on Friday.
“A joint party of police and troops cordoned off Gurmohla in Akhal village on Thursday evening and launched searches. Militants present there opened fire on the search party which was retaliated triggering an encounter,” a police officer told Greater Kashmir.
He said that in the ensuing gunfight two militants and a policeman Dilwar Singh have been killed so far while a trooper Asrar Ahmed of 24-RR and two policemen Omkar Singh and Mudasir Ahmad have been wounded.
Two civilians Farooq Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Qadir Bhat of Akhal and Ghulam Hassan Awan son of Muhammad Yaqoob Awan of Margund, according to police, were hit by stray bullets during the gunfight. “The Station House Officer Kangan rushed Farooq and a pregnant lady Maimoona, who were caught in the gunfight to Sub district hospital Kangan for treatment,” police said.
