Cop held for ‘fraudulent’ withdrawal of Rs 8 lakh
SHAHID RAFIQ
Kupwara, Oct 27: Police has arrested a cop in Kupwara for “fraudulently” withdrawing Rs 8 lakh from the SSP Kupwara’s police welfare fund account.
Police has recovered Rs 2.50 lakh from the possession of the accused.
Sources said Shabir Ahmad Lone of Halmatpora Kupwara working in bomb disposal squad at Kupwara approached the concerned police authorities for loan under police welfare fund and Rs 8,000 were sanctioned in his favour.
They said “the cop scanned the cheque, forged the SSP Kupwara’s signatures and seal, prepared another cheque and succeeded in transferring Rs 8 lakh from the account head of police welfare fund into his personal account from the JK bank Kupwara’s main branch.”
Sources said the cop easily deceived the bank authorities who transferred the huge amount without cross checking or verifying the cheque.
“SSP in his own competence can sanction only Rs 10,000 as loan to a policeman in need of financial assistance. But why such a huge amount was transferred by the bank authorities under the same account head?” questioned the police officials.
The scam was unearthed on Tuesday when officials from SSP’s account section found variation in the balance and later found alleged fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 8 lakh in the name of the accused.
