Cong downplays PM comparing his govt with Nehru’s
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Sept 10: Congress today played down Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that his government was more cohesive than that of Jawaharlal Nehru saying he did not mean to say that any government was bad.
“These are all Congress governments. In their time, all these
governments worked well. It is not correct to say this government is good or that government is bad. Prime Minister did not mean to say that any government was bad,” party spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told reporters.
Asked whether the party agrees with Prime Minister’s remark, Ahmed said the remark would have been made in certain context and it should be seen in its totality.
“How can we say that this UPA government is better than the last one or the last government was better than this one. The last government was good and this too is good,” he added.
Ahmed also hailed Manmohan Singh as a “very effective and competent” Prime Minister, dismissing reports of any differences between him and party chief Sonia Gandhi on the issue of environment and development.
“There is no difference between the two... Between what the Prime Minister said and what the Congress President said The party line is striking a balance between environment and development,” party spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told reporters.
He said that the Prime Minister has been “very effective and competent” and an international magazine has adjudged him among one of the ten most competent leaders in the world.
