Electronic media’s rendezvous with Geelani

M HYDERI

Srinagar, Sept 21: His age and ill health didn’t seem to come in way of replying the rapidfire queries as 81-year-old seperatist leader Syed
Ali Geelani spoke to New Delhi based TV channels on the sidelines of the his meeting with the All Party Delegates.
Geelani who has been under house arrest at his Hyderpora residence here was literally jostled by the young mediamen  eager to quizz the
hardliner on his stand.
Even though Geelani’s family and office bearers wanted him to take rest after meeting the delegates, Geelani didn’t mind to relpy every
question posed by the mediamen who quizzed him quite rapidly. But he seemed witty everytime.
Q: Innocent people are killed in your call for protests?
Geelani: They are being killed by Indian forces, you better stop them
from doing so.
Q: But they shoot in self defence?
Geelani: Its not any self defence. They shoot bullets on unarmed
protesters. How is it a self-defence… You better go to victims like
the recent ones in Sopur and see for yourself how innocent people are
killed.
Q: Your protests and calenders put people to difficulties?
Geelani: People follow our program with sincerity and honsety. The
difficulties are caused by those who impose curfews…
Q: Your protests go violent?
Geelani: You people have a preoccuiped view of talking.
Q: Another government agrument is that your protests are orchestrated by people like Masrat Alam?
Geelani: Why are you people after Masrat Alam and name him again and
again. He isnt holding any gun but as such carrying on with the Go
India Go Back campaign.
Q: OK. How to end this violence?
Geelani: You ask India to withdraw forces.
Q: What you want to achieve?
Geelani: We have a firm stand that we want end to Indian occupation.
Unless that is achieved our peaceful protests will continue.
Q: But people blame you that they are being killed?
Geelani: They don’t blame us. They blame the Curfew Walas, the teargas
firing Walas, the Target Firing Walas…
Q: So will the destructive protests continue?
Geelani: But these are only peaceful protests.
Q: They(All Party Delegates) came walking to you. How you take it?
Geelani: They came walking to me to serve India. Their sincerity will
be clear when the go back to New Delhi and project as to what is the
plight of victimized Kashmiris.
Q: I tried meeting you yesterday but you were under strict house arrest.
Geelani: You should ask this question to the government.
The mediamen didn’t mind walking after Geelani to his rest/reading
room and keep on talking to him. And this continued till there were no
more questions.
