Panel shortlists 3 for VC post of BGSBU

Submits names to govt

TARIQ ALI MIR

Srinagar, Sept 28: The search committee constituted for short listing the candidates for the post of vice-chancellor to Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri has recommended three names to the state government.
Sources privy to the recommendations of the committee said the four-member panel, headed by retired IAS officer, M Shafi Pandit, has put forward the names including Prof. Peer Mushtaq, presently the chairman of Service Selection Board, Prof. N A Ganai, former chairman Board of School Education, and Irshad Hamal, presently in-charge Bhaderwah campus of the Jammu University.
They said the names were forwarded to the chief minister’s secretariat on Monday adding a meeting was held at the secretariat in which top officials participated.
“Prof Peer’s name was replaced by Prof. Ayaz Rasool Nazki, the Registrar after consultations with the search committee members, since the former was already holding an important job, which too is equivalent to VC’s post,” they said.
The search committee members comprise Muhammad Yousuf Taing, Syeda Hameed and Salman Haider.
Meanwhile, the academicians across the Valley have expressed hope that the VC would be selected on the basis of merit rather than other considerations. “We hope a senior, deserving and a meritorious candidate is selected as the head of the varsity,” said a senior retired professor.
“It’s mandatory for a vice-chancellor to have worked as a professor for 10 years. Let’s hope the selection is as per the guidelines of the University Grants Commission,” he said.
