Joint teams inspect markets, book offenders
GK CITY CORRESPONDENT
Srinagar, Sept 5: Now onwards, a trader couldn’t find excuse of any sort if found violating norms be it about maintaining health and hygiene, selling goods underweight or at exorbitant prices.
The government has introduced a market inspection mechanism whereby all the concerned checking squads will move jointly. This is what happened Sunday when markets opened during a daylong relaxation call by veteran pro-freedom Syed Ali Geelani.
A joint team of squads from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution and Legal Metrology, headed by the senior officials inspected some markets in Srinagar and booked around 100 traders including mutton sellers and bakers were for violating norms.
While the SMC squad scrutinized the health and sanitation related issues, the Legal Metrology department verified the weights while CAPD checked the rate-lists of shopkeepers.Last year, the bakers had contested the inspection by CAPD saying the department wasn’t entitled to fine the traders adding only the SMC could act.“But this time things went on smoothly,” said an official.
Divisional Commissioner, Asghar Samoon said the joint inspection had been introduced for the benefit of public. “Ultimately, objective of all the concerned departments is one: that public shouldn’t suffer… We evolved a mechanism to address public grievances more effectively.”
