Save forests

This refers to the letter "Timber Smuggling" by Jazib Aslam (GK Sept 4). Timber smuggling is really a matter of serious concern. The author has rightly mentioned that we lack the knowledge about the significance and importance of forests. It is high time that we take steps to save this treasure. Government is unfortunately in a slumber. It has to wake up and initiate action against the timber smugglers. I appreciate the author’s suggestion that government should bring about a legislation that could effectively prevent the continued practice of timber smuggling. Also public awareness programmes need to be organised to make the people aware about the importance of forests.
