Sheikh Abdullah’s death anniversary today
Srinagar, Sept 7: The 28th death anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, founder of National Conference and former chief minister, is being observed on Wednesday.
National Conference is organizing Quran Khwani and Fateh Khwani for Sheikh Abdullah at his graveyard, Naseem Bagh, Hazratbal, in the wee hours.
“Later on, a function will be held at the graveyard in which the NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah, chief minister, Omar Abdullah and other party leaders will pay tributes to the late leader,” NC spokesman said.
In Jammu, the largest function, according to the statement, will be held at SK Bhawan.
VOHRA PAYS TRIBUTE
The Governor, N N Vohra has paid rich tribute to Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah and recalled his contribution to the development of J&K.
In his message, Vohra described Sheikh Abdullah as a towering and visionary leader who nurtured a dream of peace, progress and prosperity in all parts of J&K.
The Governor referred to the crucial Land Reforms pioneered by Sheikh Abdullah, which laid the foundation of equitable development of the State.
SHEIKH WAS VISIONARY: OMAR
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said the tireless efforts and leadership of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah galvanized the oppressed people of the State to rise against autocracy and injustice. He said the visionary approach, which the late leader adopted won him accolades not only during his times, but is cherished even, after around three decades of his death.
Terming Sheikh as a great revolutionary, Omar said when the sub-continent was engulfed in communal flames following partition, it was late Sheikh’s resolve and determination in communal harmony which prompted Mahatma Gandhi to proclaim that he saw ray of hope coming from Kashmir during those tumultuous times.
