Australian envoys call on Malik, Mirwaiz

Srinagar, Apr 12: A high level team of Australian High Commission today called on Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik and Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq here to discuss the prevailing situation in the state.
The team comprising Brenden Hodgeson and Sarah Kirlew, both holding second secretary posts in Australian High Commission met Malik at his Maisuma residence here this afternoon.
“I told them that for creating peaceful world the pending global issues including Kashmir should be resolved,” Malik told Greater Kashmir. “Four generations of Kashmir have been consumed by the conflict. There has been a transition from violent to peaceful means of resistance. I asked them it’s imperative to solve the issue to bring lasting peace in south Asia”.
He impressed upon the delegation to utilize its friendly relations with the both Pakistan and India to resolve the Kashmir issue on the priority basis.
“I also told them that time should not be wasted to address the Kashmir issue,” Malik said.
The delegation also condoled the demise of President of Jamiat-e-Ahl-e-Hadees (JAH), Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah, assassinated last Friday after a low intensity IeD went off outside a Masjid at Maisuma.
“They expressed concern over his assassination,” Malik said. “I told them he was an intellectual and a scholar who believed in preaching love,” he said.
Malik said, he asked Australian High Commission play their role to “identify the culprits”.
ENVOYS MEET MIRWAIZ
Envoys also called on the Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at his Nageen residence here.
A Hurriyat (M) spokesman said that Mirwaiz apprised the delegation of the “gross human rights violations in the state and the killing of Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah.”
“Mirwaiz urged the delegation to apprise the Australian government about the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir and press India for resolving the issue,” the spokesman added.
