Chandigarh, Apr 12: A nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh today lashed out at the Congress for making reference to the castes of freedom fighters in the ruling party's mouthpiece and said they fought for the nation and not for any religion or caste.
 "He (Bhagat) was born as an Indian, fought against the colonial high handedness and ultimately laid down his life for the nation and not for any region, religion or caste," said Abhey Singh Sandhu.
 The March issue of 'Congress Sandesh' describes Bhagat Singh as a freedom fighter "born in a Jat Sikh family" and Rajuguru as one "who belonged to the Deshastha Brahmin community."
 "The Congress is in a habit of making such projections to serve its narrow political ends; this explains why it is deliberately trying to mask the heroic contribution of our great martyrs by proving them terrorists and not coming out with the ideology they were wedded to," Sandhu said.
 "This historic party should have, by now, learnt to respect the sentiments of the followers of the great martyrs; they have no right to insult them and us, the way they are doing," said.
 Though the party spokesman is terming it as mere life sketches of the martyrs but we smell a nefarious design in it, said Abhey Singh Sandhu nephew of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh and son of Kulbir Singh, younger brother of the martyr.
 Anybody who is conversant with the basics of Bhagat Singh's ideology knows fully well that he was totally against the religious or caste based divides, he said here.
 He was born as an Indian, fought against the colonial high handedness and ultimately laid down his life for the nation and not for any region, religion or caste, he said.
 They have mentioned only one thing about his life that is the killing of a British police officer JP Saunders. Bhagat Singh had only taken this step to reply to the British who had killed Lala Lajpat Rai violently with sticks and also to eliminate fear of the British from Indians, he said.
