ALTAF COMFORTABLE IN KANGAN AGAIN

Srinagar, Apr 14: Forest minister Mian Altaf has once again managed to secure maximum seats for his party in Kangan constituency as around 30 out of the 43 sarpanches elected in the first phase of Panchayat elections from the constituency are close associates of the minister, sources told Greater Kashmir on Thursday.
Though the elections were held on non-party basis, sources said that as per the preliminary reports the majority of the candidates loyal to the minister have won majority of the seats giving a big boost to the ruling National Conference.
Sources said the winning sarpanches from Arigoripora, Preng-A, Preng-B, Kachnambal-A, Kachnambal-B, Wangath-A, Wangath-B, Khanan, Akhal-A, Akhal-B, Thune, Mammer-B, Dardwudder, Hariganiwan-A, Surfraw-A, Surfraw-B, Sumbal, Gund-A, Gund-B, Kulan-B, Sonamarg, Yachhama, Surfraw-A, Mammer-B, Chattergul-A, Chattergul-B, Chatttergul-C, Wussan and Chinner had contested elections after being recommended by the minister.
Meanwhile, three more sarpanches, including Ghulam Hassan from Raizen, Farooq Ahmed from Kulan and Gafoor Khan from Hawknar have also expressed their desire to support the minister.
The minister was also said to be comfortable on panch elections as around 200 out of 270 panches were the supporters of the minister. Out of these 200 around 17 were elected un-opposed.
