Contractors threaten protests, seek release of payment

Srinagar, Apr 14: Accusing finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather of pursuing discriminatory policy in the allocation of funds, the Jammu and Kashmir Contractors’ Co-ordination Committee on Thursday threatened protest demonstrations if their problems were not solved immediately.
The Committee at a meeting held here today with its chairman Ghulam Jeelani Purza in chair, expressed serious concern over the alleged negative attitude of state finance minister towards resolving the contractors’ problems.
“The contractors will be constrained to come on streets if their demand to clear their pending bills are not met,” said a spokesman of the Committee.
Meanwhile, the Committee has appealed to chief minister Omar Abdullah to take personal interest in alleviating the hardships of contractors.
The contractors said that even though they had executed the government works after raising loans from banks, “our bills are pending at treasuries.”
The contractors said the government had been imposing tall tax rates. “It is quite astonishing that while on the one hand the government is saying it has no problem of the funds, on the other our bills are pending at the treasuries for weeks together,” they said.
