Cross-LoC trade hits tax roadblock
Chakkan Da Bagh (Poonch), Apr 14: It was tipped to be one of the prime confidence building measures between India and Pakistan. But cross-Line of Control trade remains suspended for the past six weeks after J&K government decided to levy tax on it.
Traders in Chakkan Da Bagh near the LoC staged a shutdown to protest against the state government's decision to levy sales tax on the trade.
Locked godowns and a deserted trade centre demonstrated that the shutdown had a massive support.
"This trade was supposed to be duty-free. After two-and-a-half years, the government has suddenly decided to levy tax on it," says Pawan Anand, President, Cross Loc Traders' Association.
