Low lying manhole at tourist hub

Residents adopt novel way to protest

‘FIRST IMPRESSION OF UEED TOWARDS MANKIND—GORGE FOR DEATH’

GK NEWS NETWORK
Srinagar, Apr 14: Irked by inaction of the authorities to repair a low-lying manhole which has led to many accidents to motorists, the residents of tourist hub of Dalgate have adopted a novel way to show their resentment.
The residents have erected a hoarding around the low-lying manhole to register their protest against the UEED authorities for what they said “acting as mute spectator to the important issue”.
“Danger. First impression of UEED towards mankind—Gorge for Death,” the hoarding around the manhole reads.
The residents said the problem started last year with the macadamization of the main Dalgate road.
“The concerned authorities did not raise the level of manholes in tandem with the road.  This led to a depression near the manholes. As the manholes are located in the middle of the road they lead to bumpy ride.
“Due to constant pressure of the vehicles, one of the manholes has been extensively damaged and in the past few months over 50 accidents have occurred due to it leaving dozens of people injured,” they said.
The locals said they had umpteen times approached the UEED authorities to raise the level of the manholes. “We had also approached the Chief Minister’s grievance cell to demand action against the concerned officials for putting the lives of people at risk. Ironically, no action has been either taken against the officials or to repair the manhole,” they said.
“If the authorities fail to repair the manhole in a next two days, we will be forced to stage sit-in on the main road,” they stated.
