City police starts drive against car thefts, burglaries
North cops blow success whistle; Bust gang of inter-district car lifters; 11 vehicles, household items worth Rs 30 lakhs recovered

Srinagar, Apr 20: Following frequent complaints of car thefts and burglaries in Srinagar, the City police has started a special drive to tackle the crime while in the first four days commodities worth around Rs thirty lakhs including 11 vehicles have been recovered.
This was revealed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Central Kashmir range, Abdul Gani Mir while addressing a press conference in north zone of the City.
The DIG flanked by City police chief Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari said the police has started the special drive against crime for the benefit of the common people.
“Srinagar police is doing an excellent job and the recovery rate of the stolen goods has been 55 % which is higher than the national average of 38.8 %,” the DIG said.
He said some 280 vehicles have been stolen since last year whereas over 80 of them have been recovered.
“Vehicles worth Rs 2,80,00,000 have been recovered,” he added.
THE NORTH SUCCESS
Interestingly, most of the recovery displayed before the media was made by north zone of the City police.
Of the eleven vehicles, seven have been recovered by the north while as three were recovered by West and a bike by South.
The north police also busted inter district gang of car lifters.
Giving details, the DIG said that police station Mehraj Gung had recovered a Tata Indica JK02AG/8616, Vista- JK012AP/4734 and one Scorpio without registration number.
Police division Noor Bagh recovered a Santro- JK01M/1059 and two motorcycles bearing registration number JK01L/639 (CBZ Extreme) and JK01M/2415 (Pulsar).
Similarly, police station Rainawari recovered a Maruti 800 JK04/2976.
THE CAR LIFTERS
The DIG said eight car lifters were arrested during the campaign. They were identified as Muhammad Shafi, Shabir Ahmad, Farooq Ahmad, Showkat Ahmad Malla, Aftab ahmad, Asif Ali, Parvaiz Ahmad, and Muhammad Yaseen.
OTHER RECOVERIES
Giving details about the other stolen property, the DIG said police station Safakadal recovered 150 copper Tramis, one generator besides sixteen cement bags which were stolen from a government building.
Similarly, police station Khanyar recovered thirty one gas cylinders and six gas riffling machines stolen some days back. The approximate cost of these recoveries is made out to be 25 lakh.
THE FAKE RCS
The police has recovered a computer from the possession of one of the accused Asif Ali, who used to prepare fake Registration Certificates for the stolen cache.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, the SP north Showkat Shah said the accused would print fake RCs which resembled the original ones.
“Infact he(accused) would issue multiple RCs for the same vehicle,” he added. SP West Dr Sunil Kumar was also present on the occasion.
