Dardpora, Arin residents at loggerheads
WATER DISPUTE
TARIQ RASOOL
Dardpora (Bandipore), Apr 23: Residents of two twin villages--- Dardpora and Arin---in this north Kashmir district are at loggerheads over a water dispute.
The dispute arose when the district administration decided to supply drinking water to the residents of Arin from a spring in Dardpora village. However the villagers of Dardpora snapped the water supply after department laid pipes saying that the supply would hit them. “We have only one source of water it is hardly able to fulfill our requirements. If government goes ahead with its plan it won’t serve any purpose and both the villages will be left high and dry,” residents of Dardpora told Greater Kashmir.
“The tussle between the residents of both the areas has been going on for the past 3-months. After the residents of Dardpora objected to the decision of the administration and snapped the water supply residents of Arin retaliated by blocking the roads and snapping the power supply,” said a resident.
The whole issue is pending in the office of the Deputy Commissioner Bandipore.
Residents of both the villages alleged that administration was not showing “any interest.” “It is due to the official apathy that the issue has taken an ugly turn,” said a resident of Dardpora.
However, residents of the Arin village said that Dardpora had ample water resources. “They (residents of Dardpora) are making a mountain out of a mole hill,” they added.
When contacted the Deputy Commissioner Manzoor Ahmed Lone said that an alternative water supply scheme is under construction to address the issue. “The issue will be sorted out within 15-days as department is going to supply water from another alternative water reservoir,” he added.
