Kandi Baramulla prone to subsidence, landslides: Report

ALTAF BABA

Baramulla, Apr 26: The Geology, Mining and Soil Conservation department has revealed that the entire area of Kandi Baramulla was prone to subsidence and landslides during and after the rainfall.
“The area is a part of the Karewa group, which is geologically prone to subsidence and landslides during rains,” revealed a report, submitted by the departmental team to the Deputy Commissioner, after visiting the area.
The place witnessed landslides during recent incessant rains causing heavy damage to several structures and orchards.
While studying the Geological phenomenon of Dudbugh village, which falls in the Survey of India, Top sheet No 43 J/8, the report says, “The landslides appear to be governed by the incline out slope dip (1-3 Degree), litho logical variations of the slope, unusual precipitation, unusual rise of temperature (leading quick snow melting) and above all refilling and leveling of terraced land, creating ground for landslips in the area.”
The report reveals “The rainfall acts in two ways, one by creating pore space and second by resulting displacement. The presence of plastic clay does not allow the water to move deep down into the ground and provide way for displacement of overlying mass under heavy load due to water. Most cracks developed in the area are related to the earthquake of August 2005, which have not been treated as yet, such fissures, cracks could prove fatal in future.”
Another report submitted by the Soil Conservation officials, reveal that “the factors contributing to the disastrous mass movement of the land, were of geological, hydrological and biotic in nature.” According to the report, “the presence of several tributaries in upper reaches and the lower reaches has manifested itself in the form of devastative mass movement of soil. Number of gullies has emerged from either side of the sloppy agriculture land like Panzi Kul and Trandi Kasi by the peak showers and the faulty agriculture practices. This has led to the dissection of the area. Due to the nature of soil which is clayey, loams in texture and erodes easily on these steep slopes, siltation of the low lying areas/nallahs is caused.”
Suggesting few measures, the report urged the authorities that the gully erosion should be checked by constructing the check dams. “Retaining walls and protection bunds must be constructed at vulnerable spots,” it added.
