Kashmir is best known to be a tourist destination. But it doesn’t look like one, especially after 1990. While turmoil played its part, the successive governments in the state miserably failed to protect the heritage sites and other tourist destinations. Gulmarg has turned into a concrete jungle and constructions are still going on. The Dal Lake is almost dead. Hundreds of constructions were allowed in and outside the Dal Lake. Even today constructions continue in different localities. Hundreds of kanals of land in tourist destinations is under the control of security forces. The main city of Srinagar is in a shambles. Nobody is bothered to remove the muck from the streets of Residency Road, where tourists visit almost every day. The state government has already bagged 4th slot in making Srinagar appear as 4th dirtiest city. Now it seems to be aiming high. So how is Kashmir a paradise on earth, as everyone seems to say on TV channels these days?
