'No discrimination against housewives'
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Apr 27: Rejecting the view that a housewife was entitled to a lesser compensation, the Supreme Court has directed an insurance company to pay Rs 15 lakh to a woman victim of a motor accident 21 years back.
A bench of justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly said courts cannot be miserly in determining compensation to housewives and quashed the concurrent findings of the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal(MACT) and the Gujarat High Court which took a contrary view.
Ironically the victim, Urviben Chiragbhai Sheth, a widow who is now totally bedridden and has two dependent children, will get justice 21 years after the accident on May 5, 1990 in which she was permanently crippled due to multiple fractures and injury to the spinal chord.
