Metering water
This refers to the article "Senior Citizens resent govt move to install water meters" (GK 04-Aug-2011). With due respect to Senior Citizens, the justification by them for not installing water meters seems totally illogical. It is true that the precious water resources of the state are being exploited by both India and Pakistan without due compensation to the state. But that is no justification for not installing the water meters. The issue of exploitation of water by India and Pakistan should no doubt be followed up by the State govt, with keenness, to get what is due to the State. At the same time, all of us should behave like the law abiding citizens of the State. One would want to ask the Forum that how is installing meters an anti-people step. The Forum's comment that why should the water meters be installed as if the govt was importing water looks naive too. Thousands of engineers and workers of the Water Works Department work relentlessly, day and night, to bring this gift of nature to our homes. Moreover, the department spends millions of rupees to provide us this facility and no wonder we as consumers must pay for this to the extent we use the service. Installing meters is an effective way to implement all of this. In places of India like Bangalore, the water meters have been there since ages. That leaves one to wonder why these shouldn’t be installed in our state.
