Court summons police officer in alleged thrashing case

SSP:Cops gone to arrest stone pelters

MANZOOR UL HASSAN

Srinagar, Aug 13: A court on Saturday issued a summon to a police official after a family filed a complaint of alleged thrashing of members and vandalisation of house at Eidgah.
The court of First Additional Munsif Shabir Ahmad Malik on Saturday issued a summon against the Duty Officer (DO) in-charge Police Station Safakadal after listening to the complaint of the family through advocate Mir Shafqat Hussain about alleged thrashing and asked him to be present in the court on August 18.
According to the family, Muhammad Dawood, 13, of Rathpora Eidgah received head and arm injury when the police party, which had come to arrest his elder brother Zahid Fayaz, allegedly beat him to pulp. “They raided our house around 12 midnight and started ransacking the rooms,” Fayaz Ahmad, father of Dawood said. “I could make out that they had come to arrest my elder son.”
Ahmad said a joint party of Safakadal Police Station, Noor Bagh police post and CRPF personnel raided their house and went berserk. “They broke doors, window pans, cupboards and household things during the search operation,” he alleged.
“When they caught hold of Zahid, I and Dawood tried to set him free from their clutches but a cop hit Dawood thrice on his head with a gun. He start vomiting and felt unconscious and blood started oozing out of the wound”, Fayaz Ahmad said. “I raised hue and cry but they beat me also.”
He said after Dawood was drenched in blood cops carried him in a vehicle to Noorbagh police post. “I followed them and when I reached inside the post I saw cops beating the already unconscious Dawood.”
“When I intervened they pounced on him and beat him with lathis,” he said. “I somehow managed to bring him to SMHS hospital where doctors stitched his wound.”
According to the family the elder son Zahid had been booked for alleged stone pelting in 2010. “Police had registered a case (FIR 114/ 2010) against him but he was later released on bail.”
The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar Ashiq Bukhari described the allegations of the family as ‘baseless.’ “We had gone to arrest some stone pelters and we followed a normal procedure. There was no use of force from our side,” he said.
